I had another day in mind something like this one sunny green the earth just right having suffered the assault of what is called torrential rain the pepper the basil sitting upright in their little boxes waiting I suppose for me also the cosmos the zinnias nearly blooming a year too late forget it let the day go the sweet green day let it take care of itself |

Perhaps everyone
else has forgotten it,
but in the days when my mother poured her midsection into a girdle; when she gathered her nylons into flimsy donuts before unrolling them, up one leg and then the other; in the days when we, her daughters, fastened bulky sanitary napkins to sanitary napkin belts, there was Dippity Do. My mother dabbed the greenish blue gel from the jar, reached up and slid a section of hair through her fingers, then wound the hair around a bristly curler, securing it against her scalp with a plastic curler pin. Now, my daughters trap and pull their naturally wavy hair through the jaws of a straightener so that their hair might be "as straight as a pin" which is exactly the way my mother used to describe her own hair and, with an sense of tragedy, mine as well. I don't know who decides whether curly or straight is the right look for hair and I can't say that I care, but what matters to me still is the way the light changed in my mother's eyes as her gaze shifted from her own reflection in the mirror down to mine; the way her exasperation eased with the hair, the Dippity Do, the curlers; the way the wrinkles over her cheekbones deepened, and a smile emerged as if we were co-conspirators, co-creators, in some grand drama as I handed her another curler, another pin. |
On Mondays
On Mondays when
the museums are closed
and a handful of guards
look the other way
or read their newspapers
all of the figures
step out of golden frames
to stroll the quiet halls
or visit among old friends.
Picasso's twisted ladies
rearrange themselves
to trade secrets
with the languid odalisques of Matisse
while sturdy Rembrandt men
shake the dust
from their velvet tams
and talk shop.
Voluptuous Renoir women
take their rosy children by the hand
to the water fountains
where they gossip
while eating Cezanne's luscious red apples.
Even Van Gogh
in his tattered yellow straw hat
seems almost happy
on Mondays when the museums are closed.
and a handful of guards
look the other way

Repotting
The healthy plant
outgrows its pot
the way a healthy child outgrows its clothes.
Don't let it suffer constriction. Spread the Sports
or Business section of the New York Times
on the dining room table. Find a clay pot
big enough for fresh growth. In the bottom
place pebbles and shards from a broken pot for drainage.
Add handfuls of moist black potting soil,
digging your hands deep in the bag, rooting
so the soil gets under your fingernails.
Using a small spade or butter knife,
ease the plant out of its old pot with extreme
care so as not to disturb its wiry roots.
The plant is naked, suspended from your hand
like a newborn, roots and clinging soil
exposed. Treat it gently. Settle it
into the center of the new pot, adding soil
on the sides for support—who isn't shaky,
moving into a new home ?
Pack more soil around the plant,
tapping it down till you almost reach the rim.
Flounce the leaves as you would a skirt. Then water.
Place the pot back on the shelf in the sunlight.
Gather the Sports section around the spilled soil
and discard. Watch your plant flourish.

darkness I didn't understand
a second of yellow sunlight
here and gone through a hole in clouds
as quickly as a flashbulb, an immense
memory of a moment of grace withdrawn.
It is said that we are here but seconds in cosmic
time, twelve and a half billion years,
but who is saying this and why?
In the Salt Lake City airport eight out of ten
were fiddling relentlessly with cell phones.
The world is too grand to reshape with babble.
Outside the hot sun beat down on clumsy metal
birds and an actual ten-million-year-old
crow flew by squawking in bemusement.
We're doubtless as old as our mothers, thousands
of generations waiting for the sunlight.

he was Louis St. Laurent
and came from Quebec;
and we all of us laughed:
because that's who he was
and it was the kind of little joke
one expected of an elderly
former prime minister;
but the next time
he said the same thing
and the time after that,
said it quite simply
and it became obvious
it wasn't meant to be funny,
wasn't meant to be anything
other than courteous,
like his holding open the door
for whoever happened to reach it
at the same time he did
and never lighting a cigarette
without offering the pack to
the person in front and the person behind
and the persons seated
on either side of him.

The Swan

floating—a slim

the clouds of its wings,
it trails
an elaborate webbed foot,
the color of charcoal.
Soon it will be here.

when that poppy-colored beak
rests in my hand?

I miss my husband's company—

in paradise.

doesn't lie down in flat miles.

but walk slowly, and bow often.
Around me the trees stir in their leaves
and call out, "Stay awhile."
The light flows from their branches.
And they call again, "It's simple," they say,
"and you too have come
into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled
with light, and to shine."

of the youth hostel we fell
into the linen closet laughing
twenty years ago and I still
remember though not very often
the taste of cheap wine in your mouth
like raspberries the freckle
between your breasts and the next day
when we went to Versailles I hardly
saw anything because I was looking
at you the whole time your face I can't
quite remember then I kissed you
good-bye and you got on a train
and I never saw you again just
one day and one letter long gone
explaining never mind but sometimes
I wonder where you are probably
married with children like me happy
with a new last name a whole life
having nothing to do with that day
but everybody has something like it
a small thing they can't help
going back to and it's not even about
choices and where your life might
have gone but just that it's there
far enough away so it can be seen
as just something that happened almost
to someone else an episode from
a movie we walk out of blinded
back into our lives
